Berkun was born and raised in Queens, New York City. He pursued studies in philosophy, computer science, and design at Carnegie Mellon University.
Career
From 1994 to 2003, Berkun worked at Microsoft, contributing to projects such as Internet Explorer versions 1.0 through 5.0, Windows, and MSN.
