Doug Cook
Bio

Grandmaster Doug Cook is a distinguished taekwondo master, author, and educator with over three decades of experience in traditional Korean martial arts. He holds a 9th Dan Black Belt from Chang Moo Kwan, the highest rank attainable in that lineage, and is certified as a 7th Dan by the Kukkiwon, the World Taekwondo Headquarters. Cook serves as the president and CEO of the United States Taekwondo Alliance and is a member of the Advisory Council of the World Martial Arts Alliance.

Cook began his taekwondo journey later in life, training under the late Grandmaster Richard Chun, one of the pioneers who introduced taekwondo to the United States. He has trained in South Korea on nine separate occasions, deepening his understanding of the art's cultural and philosophical roots. In 1996, he founded the Chosun Taekwondo Academy in Warwick, New York, which emphasizes traditional martial arts instruction, including self-defense, meditation, and internal energy (Ki) development. The academy also offers classes in hatha yoga and qigong, all taught by adult black belt instructors.

Grandmaster Cook is the author of several acclaimed books that explore taekwondo's techniques, history, and philosophy:

  • Taekwondo: Ancient Wisdom for the Modern Warrior
  • Traditional Taekwondo: Core Techniques, History and Philosophy
  • Taekwondo: A Path to Excellence
  • Taekwondo Black Belt Poomsae: Original Koryo and Koryo (co-authored with Grandmaster Richard Chun)

These works have been recognized for their depth and contribution to martial arts literature. In 2011, Cook was inducted into the TaeKwonDo Times Hall of Fame as “Writer of the Year”.

Just as a stool requires three legs to stand upright, a taekwondoist must cultivate basic skills, meaningful forms, and effective sparring to have both feet firmly planted in the art.
