Muay Chaiya

What is Muay Chaiya?

Muay Chaiya is a traditional form of Thai martial arts, originating from the Chaiya district in the Surat Thani province of southern Thailand. It is one of the older styles of Muay Boran, the ancient martial art that predates modern Muay Thai. Muay Chaiya is known for its distinctive fighting stance, which is low and compact, allowing for strong defensive capabilities and quick counter-attacks.

Key features of Muay Chaiya include:

  1. Stance and Guard: The stance is low and wide, providing stability and balance. The guard is high, protecting the head and torso, with the elbows close to the body.
  2. Defensive Techniques: Emphasis is placed on blocking, parrying, and evading strikes. Practitioners use their forearms, shins, and knees to block attacks.
  3. Counter-Attacks: Muay Chaiya practitioners are trained to quickly counter-attack after defending, using a combination of punches, kicks, elbows, and knees.
  4. Grappling and Throws: The style includes grappling techniques and throws, allowing practitioners to control opponents at close range.
  5. Training Methods: Traditional training methods include shadowboxing, pad work, sparring, and conditioning exercises to build strength, speed, and endurance.

Muay Chaiya is valued not only for its effectiveness in combat but also for its cultural and historical significance in Thailand. It is often practiced to preserve the traditional martial arts heritage of the region.

I've been a black belt for longer than it took me to get to black belt: longer than it took me to get through all the other belts combined. At some point in all of that you start to realize that the belt don't actually matter. You start to realize that what matters is being on the mat. What matters is the time you get to spend with this art. The rest of it is just window dressing.
